Sewers, Overflows (CSOs / SSOs) and Stormwater

Sewers, Overflows (CSOs / SSOs) and Stormwater

TSS sensors deliver real‑time concentration alerts in sewers and when overflow events occur (Combined Sewer Overflows - CSOs or Sanitary Sewer Overflows - SSOs). Olpas sensors offer the best in industry for resistance to fouling and drift, resulting in an economic measurement with low maintenance requirements.

Olpas sensors provide a highly durable solution for water quality monitoring in challenging environments like sewers, combined sewer overflows (CSOs), sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), stormwaters or open waters. Monitoring of both the sewer-side or nature-side is supported.

Key features for sensors deployed in sewers, overflows or other challenging environments

  • Robust design, and a robust measurement technology that can withstand the challenging environment of sewage and overflows

  • Low maintenance requirements for cost efficiency and operator safety

  • Drift resistance for a reliable measurement, even in these challenging circumstances

  • Measurements in a wide range of loads and a wide range of particle sizes

  • Easy mounting

  • TSS or Sediment concentration as an alarm or monitoring of events

  • Velocity measurement integrated in some sensors

Olpas expertise in sewage and stormwater

Equipped with advanced fouling resistance and minimal sensor drift, these sensors are designed for fixed installations, or can be mounted freely or within guide tubes for stability.

“Olpas watermonitoring sensors are the most economic choice when low-maintenance is required. A once-per-season maintenance action was enough, while our previous sensor required a once-per-week visit. The ROI of the Olpas sensor was less than 6 months!”

Maintenance Advantages & Cost Efficiency

Olpas Tentacle sensors are engineered for extended maintenance intervals, lasting up to six times longer than optical sensors. With exceptional fouling resistance and drift control the maintenance needs are minimal - even without automated cleaning mechanisms.

This resilience makes it the most cost-effective choice for sewer networks (sewers themselves, overflows, stormwater), WWTP influents, and other harsh environments.

Usage of Olpas Sewer sensors

  • Monitoring Sewers and Sewer Overflows (sewage-side or nature-side)

  • Monitoring TSS in influent for proactive WWTP adjustments

  • Ensuring compliance with discharge standards

Sensor Hardware

Olpas sensors for water monitoring are available as part of the Olpas Tentacle hardware series, consisting of a robust sensor with power&data-cable. The sensors are easy to install free-hanging or in a guiding tube.

The Olpas Nerite hardware series is to be installed fixed and submersed, at the bottom of the stream. It measures both TSS and flow velocity.

The dual-purpose Data Cable

The cable supports both power (via solar, batteries, or grid) and data transmission, ensuring reliable connectivity for continuous operation in remote or hard-to-reach locations.

Communication & Data Access

An optional communication node collects and stores data, sending updates to a dashboard at regular intervals for easy remote monitoring. The data communication uses open standards, allowing you to integrate the measurements 100% within your own systems. There is no obligation to use our software, no expensive monthly fees are required.

Sewers and Overflows

TSS (Total Suspended Solids) is the most important water quality indicator. Olpas’ industry-leading fouling resistance makes measuring TSS economically manageable in challenging environments like sewers, overflows, CSOs, and remote open waters.
