Sludge Dewatering

Sludge Dewatering

We provide sensors for a complete insight into your sludge dewatering process by measuring sludge concentration, monitoring filtrate/centrate quality (TSS and residual polymers) and Dry Solids (%DS) in dry cake.

Sludge dewatering is an energy intensive process, that removes water from sludge in order to reduce volume and weight for further treatment (or disposal). No matter what dewatering methods are used, finetuning the process minimise both the economic and environmental cost.

Full monitoring of the dewatering process

Dewatering is performed using a wide variety of technologies. We often see:

  • Centrifuges

  • Belt filter presses

  • Screw presses

  • Gravitational thickening

"Most dewatering processes are only partially monitored, or are not monitored at all. Important reasons are the economic cost (both CAPEX and OPEX, providing a low ROI) and high mainenance requirements. Thanks to the innovative OLPAS measurement technology and the Olpas sensors, monitoring of the dewatering process is now an option for all installations."

Olpas has multiple sensors available for a complete monitoring. Not all of these are required! Even one or two sensors you can trust on, are enough to provide massive gains in efficiency.

The 5 measurements for a complete insight into your dewatering process (Not all are needed!)
The 5 measurements for a complete insight into your dewatering process (Not all are needed!)
  1. Monitoring Sludge inlet

  2. Centrate Monitoring: Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in centrate

  3. Residual polymers in centrate (Actually: Polyelektrolyte (PE), Polymers, Flocculant or Coagulant in low concentrations)

  4. Sludge Cake (DS% in dry cake)

  5. PCM (Polymer Concentration Measurement*) at polymer dilution & activation

For usage in other sludges (eg. iron water sludge), monitoring solutions are available that can be installed inline or free hanging in a gravity thickening bassin.

Keep an eye on the dewatering efficiency and dosing effectiveness by measuring solids and polymers during different stages of sludge dewatering.

Applications in this field

An Olpas Sludge Concentration sensor installed at a WWTP

TSS - Total Suspended Solids

Total Suspended Solids (TSS) is the portion of not dissolved solid particles suspended in water.
This includes organic and inorganic materials, such as silt, decaying matter, industrial wastes, and sewage.

Dry Solids (%DS) in sludge cake

Dry Solids measurement for Dry Cake, measuring sludge cake density in concentrations from 10 - 40 %DS. There are inline sensors available, and sensors with a sample-grabbing device.

Residual Polymer (PE) in centrate/filtrate

Monitoring residual polymers in centrate is crucial for optimizing the dewatering process. The Olpas sensor provides a reliable measurement of this hard-to-measure parameter, even in dewatering centrate.

Dry solids in Iron Sludge and Iron Slurry

Measuring Dry Solids (dry matter) in iron sludge / iron water for mining and water supply (drink water production) or industrial water treatment

TSS in dewatering centrate/filtrate

Measuring Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in dewatering centrate is a challenging task, but the innovative OLPAS ultrasound measurement technology makes it achievable, providing valuable insights into the dewatering process's effectiveness.

Polymer (PE) concentration in high concentrations

Olpas PCM (Polymer Concentration Measurement) measure high concentrations of PE/Polymer flocculant for monitoring of the PE dissolution/activation process.

Sludge Concentration (Solids concentration in sludge)

The Olpas Sludge Concentration sensors offers a cost-effective measurement with maintenance intervals that are four times longer compared to optical sensors.

Centrate / filtrate monitoring

Monitoring centrate is crucial for optimizing the dewatering process. The specially designed Olpas sensors have a superior fouling resistance, measure in the most dirty circumstances (even when high loads of TSS and PE are present) and can compensate for air bubbles present in centrate.

High Solids Concentration Measurement

Available for inline measurement (with the sensor in direct contact with the fluid or paste) and as a clamp-on (for measurement through the pipe).
For high solids concentrations up to 60 %DS.
