TSS - Total Suspended Solids
Total Suspended Solids (TSS) is the portion of not dissolved solid particles suspended in water. It includes organic and inorganic materials, such as silt, decaying matter, industrial wastes, and sewage.
Olpas TSS sensors measure in ranges from 0-1000 mg/L and 0-2000 mg/L to 0-20 g/L (and many more ranges), and in challenging environments like sewers, overflows or even in dewatering centrate.

Applications of TSS Meaurements
TSS in dewatering centrate / filtrate
TSS in water monitoring
TSS in sewers, combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and stormwater
...
Key features
A reliable drift-resistant measurement of TSS
Fouling resistance, also in the most challenging environments:
TSS measurements in sewers or overflows
TSS measurements in filtrate with high residual polymer load (leading to additional fouling)
Low maintenance and easy cleaning
Olpas TSS sensors where optical turbidity sensors fail
Current state-of-the-art optical sensors fail to measure the concentration accurately in changing conditions, due to their dependence on the optical parameters of the centrate.
Furthermore, fouling is often present after a few days of operations (sometimes even hours when used in centrate - especially in centrate with high residual PE!).
Application: TSS in dewatering centrate / filtrate
Measuring Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in dewatering centrate is a challenging task due to the big flocks of solids and the air bubbles. The (often) high concentrations of residual PE and extreme variations in solids concentration and diameter, have an impact on the accuracy when traditional measurement technologies are used. That's why Olpas developed its end-to-end measurement, with flow-cell. Together with the innovative OLPAS ultrasound measurement technology it makes measuring TSS in centrate achievable, providing valuable insights into the dewatering process's effectiveness.
Centrate quality as an essential parameter to monitor the dewatering process, and provide feedback control
TSS in centrate gives important insight in the dewatering efficiency, but also provides quality assurance: it ensures that the quality of the separated liquid (centrate) meets the requirements before it is flow back into the WWTP for processing.
An accurate reliable measurement that swiftly follows the trend allows the control system logic to adapt the sludge flow-rate, dewatering-parameters and PE-concentration.
Application: TSS in sewers and storm overflows
Equipped with advanced fouling resistance and minimal sensor drift, these TSS sensors are designed for fixed installations, or can be mounted freely or within guide tubes for stability.
“Olpas watermonitoring sensors are the most economic choice when low-maintenance is required. A once-per-season maintenance action was enough, while our previous sensor required a once-per-week visit. The ROI of the Olpas sensor was less than 6 months!”
