Sediment monitoring

Measuring suspended sediment concentration (SSC) helps evaluate transport dynamics and erosion impacts, supporting environmental monitoring and sediment management in hydrodams, rivers, lakes, coastal systems and canals.

With extended maintenance intervals and low power consumption, Olpas acoustic backscatter sensors (ABS) provide an economical solution for sediment load monitoring (Suspended Sediment Concentration or SSC) in open waters, canals, lakes, hydrodams and coastal system.

Featuring advanced (bio)fouling resistance and no need for fault-prone mechanical wipers, these sensors require minimal maintenance, thus significantly reducing service visits, while providing an accurate measurement.

The sensors have an exception broad measurement range, and measure concentration of particle sizes from nano-meter, micrometer to millimeters)

Sediment monitoring

The Olpas Tentacle Sensor range is build with remote monitoring and IoT-readiness at its core.

Renowned for their accuracy and superior fouling resistance, these sensors exhibit minimal drift during measurement campaigns, and no need for frequent maintenance.

This makes Olpas sensor the most optimal practical and economical choice for remote monitoring.

In environments such as canals, rivers or hydrodams, a single visit per season suffices for maintenance or battery replacement.

"By installing Olpas sediment sensors, we could slash the maintenance visits from once-per-week to once-per-season. Looking at the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), we were able to install more then double as many sensors for the same budget, while needing less maintenance personal."

Key features

  • Broad range of particle sizes (from nanometers to millimeters)

  • Broad range of concentrations

  • No impact of temperature changes

  • Extensive fouling resistance, resulting in:

    • 4 times longer maintenance intervals in challenging environments (like sewers)

    • 8- or 16-times (!) longer maintenance intervals in natural waters, lakes and rivers

  • Less drift, compared to traditional optical sensors (even with a longer maintenance intervals)

  • No automated mechanical cleaning necessary (so, finally a measurement solution that does not need automated wipers!)

  • Colour changes of the water have no impact on measurement

  • Operates in direct sunlight, and no impact of optical changes (contrary to Optical Backscatter Sensors - OBS)

IoT-ready

  • IoT-ready, with digital output optimised for energy efficient data communication

  • Low energy usage

  • Easy to connect to an external powersupply (batteries or solar)

Other measurements available

Next to the SSC-measurement, Olpas sensors are also available for TSS-measurements in rivers and open waters.
