SSC - Suspended Sediment Concentration

Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC) is the amount (mass) of mineral and organic particles suspended in water. These particles include soil, silt, clay, sand, and sometimes fine debris.

Olpas SSC sensors measure concentrations in the range 0-50 g/L for an exceptional wide range of particle sizes.

Applications

SSC is a key parameter in environmental, hydrological, and industrial water monitoring for several reasons:


Application: Environmental Monitoring

  • Erosion and Sediment Transport: SSC helps assess soil erosion rates in rivers, streams, and catchment areas.

  • Habitat Health: High sediment levels can smother aquatic habitats, clog fish gills, and block light needed for aquatic plants (like submerged vegetation).


Application: Protecting Hydrodams and industrial water inlet

  • Knowing SSC at particular times is important to protect turbines when concentrations are high. The cost impact of letting turbines run during high-SSC events is enormous.


Applications: Industrial and Municipal

  • Water Treatment Plants: Suspended solids affect filtration and chemical treatment processes.

  • Construction Sites: Sediment runoff monitoring ensures compliance with environmental regulations.
